Initiating Lactation

Initiating Lactation was established in 2016 in an effort to provide families the resources to find health and happiness with infant feeding and care.  Over the years, the practice has grown to include a lactation full-time clinic accepting most insurance plans.  The practice continues to offer home visits and virtual lactation services in addition to clinic visits.  We are excited to get back to offering in-person education for families soon, but until then all of the classes are available in an online format. Founded by Sarah Cassidy, a local mother, RN and second generation lactation advocate, Initiating Lactation offers a safe and supportive place to families as they start their parenting journey no matter how they are feeding their baby.

Meet the Initiating Lactation Team

Sarah Cassidy, RN, BSN, IBCLC, LMT
Prior to founding Initiating Lactation, Sarah's clinical background was in Pediatric Home Nursing, Labor and Delivery and lactation consultation in a hospital setting.  In addition, Sarah had the unique privilege to train in a variety of emotional health and family support models through the Nurse Family Partnership.

Sarah's years of experience as a registered nurse, combined with over twenty years of practicing massage therapy bring a unique combination of compassion and dedication to clinical excellence with a foundation in evidence based practice. As the mother of two children, she has learned that parenting requires great flexibility and can lead us down unexpected paths.

After the birth of her first child in 2006, she was disappointed by the gap in care for mothers and infants during early postpartum.  Becoming a parent led her on a path toward becoming a nurse and lactation consultant. Her career has been dedicated to improving lactation support and early postpartum care for families in the South Puget Sound.
